WSG has suspended operations.
We thank our customers for their support over the last 4 years. We were proud to not only provide heirloom-quality crafts to our patrons, but to sponsor children's charities, support to the unfortunate in local shelters, the Knights of Columbus, the Pickin' Life Project, and the Class of 1984 Gift to the US Military Academy at West Point. We hope to return to operations some day in the future; but until then, may God Bless Y'all.

Similar woods include firs and spruces
Poplar is considered a hardwood, but is fairly soft and lightweight. It tends to be less expensive, and ranges in colors from pale white, light yellows, yellow-green, green, and oxidizes to a rich light brown. Poplar can be used for many projects, but may not be suited for highly detailed carved work. It can hold laser detail very well.
Walnut is an amazing wood, rich in color and grain. It comes with a gorgeous, rich, medium to darkchocolate-brown color and unique grain and pattern. Walnut takes detail and carving tools excellently, but due to its darker tone, has fewer stain options and can hide some details. It can tend to be among the more higher costing choices, but is often well worth it.
Oak is strong, relatively rot resistant, and generally among the better woods for working. Medium-details carve well, but some fine details can "blow-out". The pattern of hard and soft layers can cause variations in laser work that can be lively and exciting to mildly distracting. Oak varieties run in shades of blonde, reddish, and brown

Red Oak tends to be less water-resistant than white. Oak stains well, and is often worth the extra cost over other woods, such as pine and poplar.

We typically use birch and basswood plywood, often in very thin sheets for our thin or lightweight products and applications. We currently use Baltic Birch only when sourced from non-Russian companies. We can also laminate these sheets over or into other woods to create items with a special finish and strength.
Cedar is a colorful wood, with generally a mild reddish color. Unfinished cedar has aromatic properties, is generally resistant to insects, and deters some pests. Cedar carves and laser-etches well, with only some difficulties with highly detailed work. Cedar is a notch up in cost from lighter wood in price, and is not generally best suited for many outdoor applications.
Cherry wood tends to have reddish tinted color, but can take on a rich brownish tone as well. It can be stained and finished to rich and fine finishes. Cherry can be a great choice for many uses. Cherry can provide opportunities for wonderful gifts, but may not be suited to super-fine detail work.
WSG has access to many woods native to the US and Canada. If you are interested in a wood not listed here, please contact us. Not all woods are suited to laser or carving work, but it is often possible to use multiple woods in inlays or laminated work to give you the best properties of multiple types of lumber. Many of these are immediately available, but some may require ordering and a delay.

Imported wood can offer many beautiful options to your product, and a range of colors not available in domestic woods, such as orange, purple, and multi-colored grains. Many are surprisingly affordable, but not all are suited to all applications, such fine text or artwork being etched or carved. Some are readily available, but others must be ordered and shipped. Some are very heavy, and some can be expensive.
Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) is used in lots of products. It's basically wood chips, saw dust, and glues. We use MDF in prototyping, and occasionally when specifically requested by a customer; we do not normally make products with MDF, and we never use pre-printed veneers over particle boards or MDF.
